Archiving Solutions from HP - "Information Lifecycle Management"
Throughout its life, data requires different levels of performance, availability and protection. At first, fast read and write speeds simplify editing and sharing. The data is also critical to daily operations and therefore demands high levels of availability and protection. In time, data becomes less important, and is used less frequently. Eventually, data is no longer used but may need to be retained for specific lengths of time, have a demonstrable audit trail and be readily retrievable. By understanding the utilisation patterns, retention requirements and business value of data sets, IT departments can route data to resources with appropriate levels of performance, availability, immutability and cost. This is Information Life Cycle Management (ILM).
Archiving solutions from HP
HP has a number of solutions which can help your customers as part of the archiving stage of an information lifecycle management strategy, two of which are Reference Information Storage System and Ultra Density Optical disk drives.
In the enterprise market
HP StorageWorks Reference Information Storage System (RISS). RISS integrates all of the required hardware, software and services that deliver cost-effective, long-term storage of reference information. The solution architecture supports linear scalability without loss of performance by intelligently distributing terabytes of content across a grid of storage smart cells. Application aware, content based indexing, and powerful search tools ensure unprecedented accessibility to information. Data is stored securely to mitigate risk, while also assisting customers in complying with retention regulations. |
In the mid-market
HP StorageWorks Optical Jukeboxes are designed for long-term, permanent, archival storage of electronic records or data. Now with storage capacities from 30GB in a standalone desktop product and 1.0 to 7.1TB in jukeboxes, HP is able to provide most customers with a capacity point to meet their needs. Additionally, the ability to have a mixed-drive solution in both the mid-range and high-end allows customers with legacy Magneto-Optical media to still read their old media yet take advantage of the new, higher capacity UDO drives and media.

Veritas Archiving Solutions |
From a basis of sound data protection products such as VERITAS Backup Exec, VERITAS NetBackup and VERITAS Desktop and Laptop Option, VERITAS have recently expanded their range of data management products to include VERITAS Enterprise Vault.
VERITAS Enterprise Vault is transparent to end-users and applications, and helps companies by providing an auditable trail that shows: who created a piece of data, where it was created, who read it, who changed it, when these events took place, where it is now, and what policies are applied to it. Policy-based archiving allows organisations to archive data out of Windows servers into the Enterprise Vault server in order to manage data growth. It helps reduce the total cost of ownership of data by automatically enforcing data management policies to match data needs and storage resources by migrating data away from expensive media.
Enterprise Vault helps organisations reduce business and IT risks related to retaining and managing unstructured data such as: messaging content and storage management. It reduces storage costs, simplifies data retention and offers dramatic time-savings by enabling the rapid discovery of historical data. Enterprise Vault provides archiving for Windows file systems, e-mail, Instant Messaging, and Microsoft Office SharePoint.
