Singlesource News: September 2005 |

| |
Hello again and welcome to the Singlesource Newsletter.
We receive feedback from our Engineers of technical problems they find when visiting a user’s site, either as part of a contract site audit or during investigation of a fault call. Many of these “problems” may have existed for some time before our Engineers visit site.
Starting with this edition of S1 we will be including a section called “Engineers Talk” in which we will cover some of the problems we have found with possible corrective actions or strategies for prevention.
As always we do like to hear from you and value your comments, please contact us at sales@singlesource.co.uk

Sun Microsystems AMD Opteron Family
 |
Sun have increased their range of AMD Opteron powered CPU systems with the recent introduction of the Ultra 20. The Ultra 20 has a single AMD Opteron X64 based CPU, has 128Mb memory controller, latest PCI-Express graphics and up to 500Gb of internal storage.
To see our offer available on the Ultra 20 go to the web site at
http://www.singlesource.co.uk/SUN/sunsalesi.htm
different configurations are available |
Other AMD Opteron systems include SunFire V20z and V40z servers
Considering a Sun upgrade? Lower pricing on CPU parts for SunFire V40z servers.
As systems and applications grow the requirement for more computing power becomes necessary but your customers may not need to migrate to more expensive equipment.
Select SunFire V40z server CPU parts have been re priced to remain as a competitive option for entry-level server customers. Lower pricing has been applied to the SunFire V40z servers with AMD Opteron 850, 852 and 870 CPU options. The re priced parts are daughterboards with AMD Opteron CPU’s expanding dual CPU systems to quad CPU capability.
If your customers are considering upgrading their systems, by increasing the amount of or adding faster CPU’s, expanding the Hard Disk Drive capacity; Singlesource can carry out these installations.
As we have extensive contacts we can provide both new, remanufactured or 2nd user parts and equipment with 12 months warranty.
We can also supply and install later revision levels of Operating Software.

Are your user's running HP-UX 10.20?
HP discontinued support for 10.20 at the end of June 03.
HP no longer offer any support for this version of HP-UX and are recommending that end-users upgrade their software to HP-UX version 11.
HP-UX 10.20
Singlesource will still offer support for HP-UX 10.20 where the user does not want to upgrade or their applications do not work with HP-UX 11.
The support will be for OS only and will be up to the latest level provided by HP prior to 30/06/2003 when their support for HP-UX 10.20 was discontinued. Any debugging will be restricted to corrections available as of the same date.
All patches available for HP-UX 10.20 can be supplied where required. There will be no new patches beyond 30/06/2003.
Migrating to HP-UX 11.0
Singlesource is offering a migration service for those end-users wishing to upgrade. If the end-user has their software under maintenance with HP, then the upgrade will be free for the OS, and all the user will have to purchase will be a day or two consultancy. We can provide the license for the upgrade to HP-UX 11 where required with full support available from HP.
The benefits of upgrading to HP-UX 11:
- Full 64 bit operation and much greater memory addressing capability
- Supports latest and highest performance-PA-RISC technology
- Supports lower cost Itanium 2 processors
- Enables server consolidation
- Fully supported by HP
- Lower management costs
For more information on the migration to HP-UX 11 or the continuing support for HP-UX 10.20 Operating System contact sales@singlesource.co.uk

Engineers Talk |
Help your customers avoid machine faults and downtime
|
Often when our engineers respond to a fault call for faulty tape storage it’s not necessarily the hardware that’s at fault. We come across all sorts of situations making it difficult for the end user to retrieve their data. This could be that they are not able to write to the tapes or read from them; there may be tape errors, again preventing the retrieval of important data. The following is a list of potential problems and the possible remedies which can reduce the possibility of a call out.
If a failure occurs, clean the tape drive and try the operation with a new cartridge.
If problems continue to occur, look for trends. For example:
- If repeated failures or unusual backup durations always occur on the same day of the week, one of your daily backup tapes may be defective.
- If failures occur only at certain times of the year (for example, during the winter), you may have a temperature or humidity control problem.
- If failures occur only at night, you may want to adjust night time temperature setbacks to keep the heating or air conditioning on until your backup is complete.
- If failures start occurring where previous system operations have gone well, you may have an environmental problem such as contamination from nearby construction.
- If load and unload failures occur with a specific cartridge, you may have a problem with the cartridge label. Make sure labels are placed in the proper areas on the cartridge, that they are not peeling off, and that they are not placed more than two layers thick.
Good Housekeeping:
Clean Your Tape Drive Regularly
Choose the Right Media
Maintain a Suitable Environment for Your Tape Drive
Store Your Tapes Properly
Replace Your Tapes Periodically
When to Replace Cartridges
Replace a cartridge that matches any of the following descriptions:
- It has been dropped or its shell has been damaged.
- It has been exposed to extremely harsh environmental conditions.
- The tape has been pinched because the cartridge door was opened accidentally.
- It causes your application to report repeated or increased media errors.
- It meets any other retirement criteria you have established.
A simple solution to an inconvenient problem; for more information or if you would like us to help your customers with this matter contact sales@singlesource.co.uk
